Taylor Noelle asked:

We’re debating this topic in class.

What are the pros and cons?
My fault…
I meant lowering the age to sixteen.

I appreciate everyone’s input, but I need concrete sources that can be sited in an actual debate.

    Pros: none.

Cons: More idiot people for greedy, evil gambling casinos to rob for no reason. More people to go into debt, further ruining our economy. More people’s credit ruined. More suicides. More hungry children. More ruined lives.

    Pros:

    - More revenue for the government
    - Government can steal your money at an earlier age with this “fools tax” and lousy lotteries.
    - More revenue for the casinos, and thugs that run these businesses. They ‘gambling establishment owners” can get even richer.

    Cons:

    - People can develop this “addiction” sooner
    - People can ruin their lives sooner
    - People will commit crimes to support their habits at an earlier age.

If you’re in the US then the national gambling age IS 18. (ie the Federal law)

It’s 21 in Nevada under State law, 18 in California. Not sure about other States.

In CA, though, most places that allow gambling also sell alcohol, so 18/19/20 year olds can’t enter. Some race tracks have betting rooms that are ‘dry’, though, and I know at least one Indian Casino (Jackson Rancheria) that sells no booze and welcomes all over 18 players.

Well Taylor, if I had my way there would be no debate because the age of adulthood would go back to 21. After living through that time when the change happened and seeing what has happened since, legal adult at 18 was a huge mistake. Like it or not, it put more unprepared, immature “kids” in harms way of legal responsibility than it was ever worth.
As to your question, pros for whom, the people who run the establishments? For them, great idea, that means more money to be spent in the casinos, and greater income for them. For the kids, more lost money, more trouble with the law, more problems making payments for things they need or are obligated to. I think the cons out weigh the pros, unless, on the pro side, you don’t care who gets hurt. Let’s put it this way, and this is possible, young couple, just married, and they already have 1 child. Do-Do hubby thinks he can beat the house, wife gives in, before they know it, the pay check is gone. Rent is due, car payment is due, as well as the other needs of the family. Would you want your baby to go without just because neither of you have sense enough to stay out of the casinos, or to limit what you spend to a very small, purposely set aside amount for just that kind of entertainment? That is why 18 for gambling is a big mistake. If the “kids” aren’t smart enough to stay out of harms way, then anyone who can take advantage of them will do so.
    I’m 56, and I win all of the time, I don’t play.
