For the sake of argument is it justifiable to set these age restrictions when people can say join the army at 18 and go die for their country?

The gambling age is 18 in some areas. Drinking age – no, statistics have shown since the drinking age has been 21 there have been 1,200 less deaths per year at least and since the age has been enforced 25,000 less deaths than previously. While some college students still drink and binge drink, it only makes it easier for them to do so when they have the access to purchase the alcohol themselves.

no. sure you can join the army at 18. but, that doesn’t mean you can be responsible enough to not drive after drinking. years ago, during vietnam, the same argument was made and they tried it. traffic accidents went out the roof.

personally i think they should raise the drinking age. been there done that.

Absolutely Not. I think we need to encourage more positive behavior besides drinking or gambling. I think the age restrictions for enlisting into the armed forces should be raised to 21. America send but too much $$$ on marketing products i.e.,smoking, drinking, gambling and ***.

That’s what australia did as soon as they started drafting boys for the Vietnam War, they public outcry that they were ‘mature’ enough to handle a machine gun, but not a pint of beer soon won over.

I don’t think you’d find college drinking is any worse over here than in the states (but hey, i only have your movies to go by:)) & i guess it means it’s less ‘underground’ so when shitt happens they know they can go get help. :) )

As others have cited areas that did have a drinking age of 18 and raised it to 21 produced a reduction in traffic fatalities in driver amongst that age group.

Should that alone be enough to encourage a drinking age of 21? By some estimates lowering the speed limit to 55mph saved 100,000 lives each year in the US, but once gas was cheap enough the national speed limit was raised back to 65mph. So I guess the government is telling us it’s OK for people to die in auto accidents as long as they’re sober and do it fast.

Funny how the laws are. Unfortunately I have found that even though there may be an age restriction on certain things that we as United States Citizens may or may not do, there are alot of people that don’t always follow that.
As a mother of 3 children, I do not think that age 18 or even 19 almost 20 is responsible enough to most decisions without the help of parents, and most of them are still living under their parents roof.
I have found that my kids have older people that if they really want to drink, they could due to the fact that the older people for free or a fee will purchase the alcohol, in whatever amounts they want and have no care in the world where this is going to be consumed at or what

    No.
The military excuse has no bearing on the issue. There is no draft,no one is forced to join the military.
When I was 18,the drinking age was 18. I lost 3 friends the last half of our senior year in HS due to drunk driving. Most 18 year olds are not experienced enough with driving skills to add alcohol into the mix.

I actually think the drinking age should be 19..and I’m 24 so it doesn’t really affect me. I don’t get why everything has to be 18 or 21. 18 is still kind of young being that you’re still in high school, and you’re decision making capability isn’t full developed. We don’t really want high school seniors giving freshman booze.

However, by 19, everyone is graduated high school, working or in college. By 19 you are independently making decisions. Any attempt to ban a legal product for legal adults above 19 clearly doesn’t work. What we have created is a prohibition binge culture at college campuses. Instead of people enjoying a drink at a bar we force them into dimly lit basement parties and keggers in the woods where they drink hard alcohol, and do it fast because they are afraid of being busted. I know that because I’ve been to those types of gatherings. Once you turn 21, the thrill of drinking goes away…and its no longer a big deal. Making it legal at 19 would make that happen two years earlier, and thus I think cause less binging deaths.

People will say that the 21 age has saved lives, but if you look at Canada’s drunk driving rates since the 1980s, they have declined just about the same as the USA’s. They have a drinking age of 18 or 19 in all of their provinces. Such statistics don’t take into account safer automobiles, increased seat belt use, and the advent of designated drivers – a term unheard of in the 1980s.

Yes they probably should but people affected by this issue usually stop caring about it once they turn 21

    Heres what you do….

Join the Army and volunteer to go to Iraq where the legal drinking age is 18. Problem solved. Drink all you want when you get there.
